5.0 out of 5 stars. Out-of-the-box comfort and performance!

I got these for a hike to Tuckerman's Ravine on Mt. Washington (NH) in early May-condition reports suggested crampons and I needed a crampon compatible boot. I have BD Contact Strap-which work with just about any boot, but wanted to be prepared for semi-technical conditions if a summit attempt was in the cards. After doing some research on women's entry-level mountaineering boots, these were at the top of many lists. I only had a day to walk around in them prior to my hike, so not much of a break-in period. Right out of the box, however, with good liner and hiking socks these were amazing! Great support on the short, steep 2.4 mile trail from Pinkham Notch to the Ravine. Strapped on crampons on some steep, icy pitches and front pointed easily up those parts of the trail. This boot is just stiff enough, but not so much so that they are uncomfortable on a level trail. Aggressive lugs got me up and down the trail when crampons weren't required. Very happy with this purchase-my first experience with Lowa, but I'm impressed!

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Warm no blisters right out of the box

These are an excellent mountaineering boot. I wore them right out of the box on a sub zero day in northern Maine to snowshoe up a mountain. Five hours later my feed were toasty warm. Mind you this was a day were I couldn't stop moving for more than 4 minutes without my hands becoming frigid. My feet never felt an ounce of cold. I only wore SmartWool socks and even had a blister from skiing in the day before. These boots are great! Exactly as advertised. They are study and solid. I think I will also use them for ice climbing. Just as other reviewers noted, go a half size down. I am usually an 8 and a 7.5 fit perfect.

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars. sized wierd

Knowing that these ran big I ordered a size 9, which usually works for me and correlates to a Mens 7.5 or a EU 40. I was suprised to see they call these a EU 41.5 - they fit like it, way bigger than what I was expecting.

I had a pair of Lowa Mountain Experts (Mens 7), they held up great for all kinds of ice climbing and mountaineering. These look like they are built about as well as the old model.

Superb quality and fit. Performance right out of the box with minimal break-in for me. Heel and toe welts for automatic crampons, worked perfectly with my Black Diamond Serac's.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Great! Runs large!

These really do seem like great boots! I have not used them outdoors yet, but am very happy with the purchase now that I have a size that fits. They do run at least a 1/2 size too large, in keeping with most Lowa boots. I was counting on STP to put the notice in the ad about these boots running large, it wasn't there when I ordered them and so I initially ordered them in my size, and had to exchange them due to a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch gap in the heel/toe area depending on how i situated my foot in the boot. I am a true 7.5 shoe size (all my running shoes and other boots are 7.5), I now own the size 7 in this boot and the boot fits comfortably only if I wear my heavy weight smartwool socks. The construction of the boot is very good, I believe they are stiff enough for ice climbing, and they are definitely crampon compatible.
