5.0 out of 5 stars. great, super light weight, packable mid layer
Reviewed by Road Warrior from Oxford, MS on Friday, April 11, 2014
Yes, the orange piping is very bright. If you don't want that, you don't want this. Me, I like a little color splash. I am on the road a lot and black is my "go to" color worn with jeans. This adds a little color to black and blue. This review is not from an outdoorsman. I am a road warrior. I lean towards road gear that allows for a lot of layering, since I often go to some pretty different temps on the same trip. I also have a religion of not checking luggage. I have tons of layers...including super thin next to skin wool layers, mid layer wool pieces. These are great for travel. They can be worn again and again and don't stink. They are light and they are warm. A black wicking T, an icebreaker next-to-skin, a mid layer, and my Helly shell and I can do about any weather. Enter the mountain hardware thermostatic. Pack down tiny, weighs almost nothing, super soft comfy fabric, adds a splash of color. Can work as a top layer in cool weather, add a next to skin if a little cooler. Add a shell if cooler still or rainy.

I am crazy about this piece. The size small fits nice and close, not tight, but not baggy at all--I am 5'8" about 150 pounds, sort of slim semi athletic build. If you are really small this would be baggy. If you have big muscular shoulders, I think it would be restrictive and you should size up.

  • 2.0 out of 5 stars. Billowy in the Torso
Verified Buyer Reviewed by Tripbuilders from 4 Corners on Friday, February 19, 2016
I ordered several thin puffy jackets. The MH Thermostatic was one of them. Super lightweight and warm considering its weight and fill, however, way too roomy in the torso area. Shoulders, arms, neck and through the upper back area fit fine. Good as a layering piece through the arms since they are very slim and form fitting. Overall, I had to send it back, the billowy torso area was too much and felt like I was wearing a moomoo. I am 5'-11", 180, 41-42 chest, 33 waist.

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Lightweight Jacket, but Sizing Way Off
Verified Buyer Reviewed by MrClemson8 from Washington, DC on Friday, December 18, 2015
This is a great, lightweight jacket and it stuffs into it's own pocket. It's easy to throw this into a pack and go. So far, it's been perfect for keeping off the morning chill on the East Coast.

Unfortunately, the sizing is way off which I'm told is common for Mountain Hardware products. I'm an athletic 5"10, 170 and I ordered a medium (my normal size) based on the reviews here. Unfortunately, the Medium was not only too long in the body but it hung off me like a size large. I returned it for a small and I'm happy so far with that decision.

Make sure you order two sizes or size down if you're concerned.

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars. Runs big quality is ok
Verified Buyer Reviewed by jetskidude from W hartford on Thursday, December 17, 2015
Got a size M for my son and I can get away wearing it and I'm 5'10" 195lb athletic built. Got it at a great price with all the discount but the quality seems a little cheap if I was to pay full price. I have the same MH style jacket L that is about 2 years old and the quality of mine is much much better.
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars. Have Long Arms? Then this is the jacket for you!

Nice fit throughout the body of the coat but the arms are very long. Not bulky or heavy at all for a puffy coat.

About Mountain Hardwear

Starting back in 1993, a small group of outdoor industry mavericks broke away from the pack to follow a less-traveled path. From the very beginning, the primary goal of Mountain Hardwear was to create an outdoor gear brand with a sharp focus on technology-driven design, superior performance and hardcore reliability. The result of this function-first mentality has been an array of incredible Mountain Hardwear jackets, clothing, tents, backpacks, sleeping bags and accessories. Today, after more than two decades of industry-leading innovation, Mountain Hardwear continues to set new benchmarks for dependability in the toughest conditions on the planet.
